808s & Heartbreak Opened The Door For Drake, Says Super Producer Miykal Snoddy

808s & Heartbreak Opened The Door For Drake, Says Super Producer Miykal Snoddy

It has been 11 years since Kanye West released 808s & Heartbreak. An album that has gotten mixed-reviews ever since it was released in 2008. The project was created in at Glenwood Studios in Burbank, California and Avex Recording Studio in Honolulu, Hawaii. West enlisted the services of producers such as Gee Roberson, Kyambo “Hip Hop” Joshua, Jeff Bhasker, Mr. Hudson, No I.D., Plain Pat, The Carter Administration, and Miykal Snoddy.

Artists that were featured on the album are Kid Cudi, Young Jeezy, Mr. Hudson, and Lil Wayne. The Tracklist includes hits like Heartless, Amazing, See You In My Nightmare, Love Lockdown, and Paranoid. Some of the musical influences that were brought in to work on the album are T-Pain, Drake, and Jay-Z.

This past October, I had the opportunity to interview Chicago native Miykal Snoddy, who composed singles like, Loving You No More, Do My Thing, Out of My Head, and Vitamin D. Those collaborations included working with artists such as, Ty Dolla $ign, Chris Brown, Trey Songz, Ludacris, Lupe Fiasco, Estelle and Janelle Monae, and Drake to name a few.

During the sit-down, we dived into the creative process of the 808s & Heartbreak to get his opinion of the album since it has been a project that has always gotten mixed reviews from the hip hop community even to this day.

“That album I feel really started to show the genius of Kanye West because he was not seen as a lyricist. He was able to show his creativity as an artist, and I think that was pivotal for him. Even though he did not say why we were in Hawaii, because the first two weeks they did Jay-Z’s album, and then they did Kanye’s for two weeks with influences coming in from Drake, Lil Wayne, and T-Pain. After that album, we saw Lil Wayne release his Rebirth album changing his whole vibe and opening the door sparking Drake’s career. 808 showcased emotion in hip-hop, and then Drake came in and perfected it. I feel that album did a lot more than the commercial sales indicated,” Snoddy Snoddy told me.

Six months after 808s & Heartbreak was released, Lil Wayne signed Drake to Young Money Entertainment in June of 2009. A year later Drizzy, released his debut album entitled ‘Thank Me Later’ with hits like Shut It Down with (The Dream), Fireworks (Alicia Keys), Unforgettable (Young Jeezy), Light Up (Jay -Z), and Up All Night (Nicki Minaj). After the release of ‘Thank Me Later’, Drake had us in our feelings ever since. Today the thirteen-year veteran is considered one of the hottest artists in the game.
